ROCKY'S APARTMENT

WELCOME TO

Welcome to Rocky’s Apartment.

Rocky’s street still looks pretty close to how it is in the movie, as some of the most beautiful moments in Rocky history happened right here.

In the midst of a modest life, burdened with struggle and seemingly no way out comes a PR stunt dressed as an opportunity for the current heavyweight champ, Apollo Creed.

building up to the fight, Rocky knows he cannot win and is able to be completely honest with himself, but in that inevitable defeat, there can be glory.

A glory framed by falling in love, finding a father figure in a manager and going the distance, this humble street provided the foundation for a rough down-and-out to truly inspire. So much of Rocky’s life started right here, including his morning run.

BEHIND THE SCENES

ROCKY'S APARTMENT

When working out the locations for the first movie, the studio wanted everything to be filmed in Los Angeles, with Union film crews. They had no interest in sending a film crew to Philadelphia, so director John Avildsen used a crew he had worked with in New York and got his wish to film Rocky right here, in the Kensington Neighborhood of Philadelphia.

The production budget was so low that they enlisted the help of the locals, who would help out by wetting down the street, since they couldn’t afford water trucks. The crew meals consisted of Pizza for the entire shoot as they couldn’t afford a catering department either.

There were no fancy Hollywood chairs for the actors to sit on, as you can see here, Adrian is sitting on the Stoop outside of Rocky’s Apartment with Butkus, in between shots.

Life imitates art in so many way’s when it comes to Rocky. No one could have imagined that  a short time after sitting on that stoop, they would be collecting an Oscar for Best Film, among others.
